What is Inflammation?

Including an Anti Inflammatory Diet into your daily routine is crucial to maintaining a happy, healthy body.  By helping your body avoid abnormal inflammation responses, you will see an increase in energy levels, reduced pain and discomfort as well as the added benefit of weight loss.  But what is inflammation, what causes it, and how does it affect your body?  When your body is under attack, your immune system produces white blood cells which fight off bacteria, viruses and infections.  Inflammation of the body occurs when your immune system goes into overdrive, even if it isn’t under duress.  Studies show autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis are closely linked to an abnormal inflammatory response.  Studies also suggest that highly processed foods can trigger this unwanted response and may even increase your chances of developing cognitive illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

How Does Diet Influence Your Body?

We’ve all heard “You are what you eat.” and as our understanding of the human body grows, this old adage may hold more truth than previously thought.  Foods such as sugar, corn syrup, artificial trans fats, vegetable and seed oils, refined carbs, alcohol, and processed meats are all known culprits of inflammation.  Excessive consumption of these items affect your levels of CRP, a marker for inflammation in your blood.  This is because processed foods release inflammatory messengers that increase your risk of chronic inflammation and developing diseases like colon cancer.  This information may sound pretty terrifying if your favorite foods include bacon, chips, cookies, and soda. Even your nightly cocktail could be doing you severe harm, but implementing an anti inflammatory diet isn’t as complicated as it sounds.  We all know too much of a good thing is bad for your health but harmful effects can be curbed with a little moderation.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods and Supplemental Aids

If you include too many processed foods in your diet there’s good news.  Antioxidants and whole foods not only combat inflammation but do wonders for your overall wellbeing by helping you maintain a healthy weight, improving your mood, and slowing down the aging process.  Everyone could stand to eat a little healthier, but what foods are anti inflammatory and how much should you include in your diet?  Life would be much easier if we were set with a single leaf of kale but, unfortunately, there is no single food that will magically improve your health.  The key is to consume a variety of healthy foods.  Berries, cacao, citrus, ginger, unprocessed or cured meat, leafy vegetables, green tea, tree nuts, and wild-caught fish are all great items to include in your new Anti Inflammatory Diet. These whole foods are rich with fiber, calcium, magnesium, zinc, Vitamin E, and Omega-3, all of which combat inflammation.
